Movie Review: The Hunger Games

The Hunger Games. What can I say... it's basically the next Twilight. Except better, from what I've heard. I've never actually seen Twilight. But anywho, The Hunger Games is based off of a popular teen novel by the same name. It's about a futuristic government that controls everything and every year makes 24 children fight to the death. Also let me just say that I did not read any of the books, so I had absolutely no expectations when going to watch it, and I won't be rating it based on how well it adopted to the book.

I liked the Hunger Games. I thought it was an interesting story that was pretty well presented. I don't think there was anything particularly special about it, and the camera shaking really bugged me at certain parts, but other than that it was pretty good.

The soundtrack... nothing memorable. Seemed pretty fitting at the time though. The characters... eh, you'll like some of them, and then you'll like seeing some other ones die. Overall I'd say it was an interesting concept presented in a pretty average manner. I give the Hunger Games a 7/10.

  1. I think that the main advantage Hunger Games has over Twilight is that it's supposedly good.

  4. I'd personally never watch it, as a teacher and a psychologist I just can't support films and books which portray kids as killers and put them in violent and aggressive situations :(

  5. You'd probably like the 2000 Japanese film Battle Royale more. The woman who who wrote Hunger Games denies knowing about the 1999 novel, movie or manga of Battle Royale.

Basically the plot of the movie is that Japan turns into a fascist state in the near-future, and every year they hold something called "The Program" which pits a middle school class against each other. The latest class is put to sleep on a bus and awake with collars (that are set to explode if they try to break the rules or escape) on their necks and are awaken by the surprise that they'll be the newest contestants on The Program.

It's a lot darker and twisted than Hunger Games, with an unpredictable plot, a great ending, many shockers, and one legendary villain. The novel is the best and the manga and film are about the same level of quality.

  7. I read that it is beating Twilight as far as numbers go. I don't like bloody movies so I'll be passing on it, though just about everyone I know went to see it.

  11. I agree with Adam in that the plot between Battle Royal and The Hunger Games is remarkably similar. If you've watched the former I'd be interested in your opinion on the comparison between the two.
