Movie Review: The Muppets

Taking a break from the 30 Day Drawing Challenge for a movie review...

Lemme start off by saying, I didn't really watch the Muppets as a kid. I mean yeah, I knew who they were, but having grown up in the 90's, I didn't really see much of them since they weren't on Nickelodeon or the other major kids television networks. That being said, this movie was fantastic. Just from knowing who the muppets were, and knowing a little background on them gave me a sense of nostalgia when watching the film.

The new Muppets movie is mainly about a new muppet named Walter who is pretty much the Muppet's number 1 fan. After persuading Kermit to get the old gang back together for the start of a new show, there are a number of 4th wall breaking moments, silly jokes and references, and most of the important plot points you'd expect from a movie made in 2011. Also Jack Black. He ends up being a pretty big part of the film. It's pretty funny, really.

Anyway, The Muppets is very heartwarming, and even though it has a lot of silly 4th wall breaking, it really works for a movie like this. An excellent example of what a comedy/musical should be, my only real complaint was that Walter's little act at the end of the movie kind of came out of nowhere. But that's okay, because the rest of the movie was great. I give The Muppets a 9/10.

Day 2: Favorite Animal

It's, guess what... a hedgehog! Isn't he cute? :3
...Yeah, I got lazy on this one, lol. But regardless, hedgehogs are my favorite animal (in case you couldn't tell), and this is my best attempt at drawing one.

30 Day Drawing Challenge

So I think I'm gonna do this drawing challenge, but instead of doing a new drawing every day, I'm just going to do one for every blog post. So that should be fun. Anyway, get ready for a lazy drawing of myself for tomorrow. Peace out.

Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai - First Impressions

You know, I said in my blog description that one of the major focuses of this blog would be anime. So far this hasn't really been the case, mostly because I haven't had much time to watch anime lately. I did, however, watch an episode last night. So I'm gonna write about that.

I picked up this anime because as I was looking through the anime for this season (which is almost last season now...), the picture of it looked like something I would like. Kind of a shallow reason, I know, but nothing else looked that great... anyway upon further inspection, I found out the show was supposed to be a seinen anime, which I'm generally into, so I figured I'd give it a go.

The first episode was... decent. You really can't judge an anime by the first episode, but I figured I'd give my first impressions anyway. Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai or alternatively, "I Don't Have Many Friends," is about this weird girl who forms a weird club with some random guy she just met. A concept no one has ever done before. Ever. Especially not in one of the most famous anime ever starring a girl whose name starts with a Haru and ends with a hi.

So far it just seems like your typical anime about high school club members, and I'm gonna give the first episode a 6/10. The animation is nice, the jokes are sometimes alright, the characters are meh, not very memorable to be honest. But like I said, you can't really judge an anime by its first episode. Anyway, if you're interested, go ahead and check it out: http://myanimelist.net/anime/10719/Boku_wa_Tomodachi_ga_Sukunai

Movie Review: See No Evil, Hear No Evil

The movie See No Evil, Hear No Evil starring Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor starts out with a very promising premise - Dave (Wilder) is deaf and Wally (Pryor) is blind. After the two of them witness a murder, they form a dynamic duo in attempt to prove themselves innocent. Within the first ten minutes of the film you're shown the actor who played Willy Wonka and a pretty funny black comedian cussing the hell out of each other, one flailing his insults around wildly as he as unable to see who he's talking to, the other unable to hear a word of it.

Unfortunately, the rest of the movie didn't quite live up to this heavy-laughter-inducing introduction. Sure, it was funny to see Pryor stumble around like an idiot and Wilder say "What??" fifty thousand times, but a lot of the jokes were hit and miss. Regardless of this, the movie was still, overall, pretty entertaining. The plot was pretty solid and, if I didn't know any better, I'd think the movie was directed by Alfred Hitchcock or Mel Brooks. (It was directed by Arthur Hiller, fyi) In the end, I give See No Evil, Hear No Evil a 7/10.

This Site...

This blog (did you know?) is so addicting. It just has a bunch of random tidbits of knowledge, but they're all interesting and presented in a simple manner that makes you want to keep reading and reading and reading... I spent at least an hour on it today and I'm sure I'll be on it for at least an hour tomorrow. Fun stuff.

In other news, I plan on picking up Super Mario 3D Land from Gamestop tomorrow, so expect a review on that within the next couple of weeks. And for one last random closing statement, the Fugitive is a pretty great movie.

Video Game Review: Sonic Generations

I'm going to divide this review into two sections. First off...

BIASED SONIC FANBOY REVIEW:

Sonic Generations is amazing. It takes the the best ideas from 20 years of Sonic and crams them all into one disc with amazing graphics, and the option to play over 100 different Sonic songs in any level in the game. As anyone who has been following this game in any way, shape, or form knows, there are two different types of gameplay in this game. The first is classic Sonic gameplay, almost identical to how you remember it from the old Sega Genesis days. The second is modern Sonic gameplay which is essentially Sonic Unleashed without the Werehog. Not only does this help accommodate the Sonic franchise's very split-up fanbase, but if you are a fan of both styles, the crazy high-speed of modern Sonic gives a nice break from the sometimes stressful but oh-so-satisfying to complete platforming levels of classic Sonic.

The game's story is kinda crappy, but most Sonic fans don't really care about the story any more, right? Unfortunately I am not one of those fans, and I was kinda disappointed with the lack of depth as far as the story goes, but on the bright side, there were some nice easter eggs and references to games from Sonic's past that, in the end, made what little plot there was worth having. As far as the Sonic franchise goes, I give this game a 9/10. Very fun to play with an awesome blast of nostalgia. The only major complaint I have is that the "3D" behind-the-shoulder sections could have been a little more "3D."

ATTEMPT AT AN UNBIASED REVIEW:

The graphics and soundtrack are really this game's strong point. The gameplay, while sometimes fun and exhilaration, is frequently bogged down by slow moving platforming sections, especially in the later stages. As stated in the other version of my review, the story is pretty crappy, but no one really plays these games for the story anyway. From the perspective of your average gamer (i.e., not a hardcore Sonic fan), I can see this game getting a solid 7/10. Entertaining, fun to watch and listen to, but nothing too special.

Mega Myan

So there's this guy, maybe you've heard of him. He's pretty popular online in the gaming community, he goes by Egoraptor. He made a video about Mega Man a couple weeks ago, and it's pretty great. Check it out.

Even if you're not into Mega Man, the guy's pretty funny. So yeah, go nuts.

Silence of the Lambs

First off I'm gonna say, I'm not really into movies like this, so I won't give an honest to goodness review of this movie, but I watched the Silence of the Lambs last night. That movie was Weird with a capital W. I wouldn't really call it a horror movie, but it was definitely a psychological thriller. Perhaps a little more psychological than thrilling.

For those of you that haven't heard of this movie, it's about an FBI agent in training, Clarice Starling, who goes to survey a confined cannibal, Hannibal Lecter, in hopes of getting leads on a ferocious serial killer who skins his victims. A little less exciting than it sounds. After Clarice interviews Mr. Hannibal, there's a lot of talking between miscellaneous characters in the film, then a bit of rising action, then a climax which leads into a brief resolution. Like my vague description? Thanks, so do I. Anyway, if you're into this kinda thing, go ahead and watch it, the movie's gotten terrific reviews. And that's about all I have to say. Ttfn, ta ta for now.

Fall Back

I really like this time of the year. Cooler weather, the holidays, and as for today, the end of daylight savings. We should really get an extra hour added to the day more often. I mean, think about how awesome it would be if everyone got an extra hour of sleep like every week or so. Too bad that would make our time/date system even crazier than it is now...

While I'm on the subject of things that would be awesome, I really wish I could teleport. Usually when I'm asked what super power I want, I say invisibility, or the ability to control time (which is kind of a lame response since it's so godly it hardly even counts as a super power), but I really do think teleporting would be amazing.

...There was something else I was going to say was awesome, but after the teleporation rant I can't remember what it was... Oh well. Later days.

Boo

Man, sorry for the lack of updates recently, been really busy. I threw a Halloween party the Saturday before Halloween. That was fun. We watched the Room.

Also we played the new Kirby game. It's pretty great. Sunday night I went to a Haunted House. It was scary. On Halloween I gave out candy with my girlfriend. Then that night we went to the midnight release of Sonic Generations at Gamestop~!!~!!~!~... so expect a review on that within the next week or so. Anyway, that's all I have to report for now. Laterz.
